TAB Auxiliary

TAB Auxiliary (Teen Advisory Board Auxiliary) is open to young adults in grades 7 through 12 who live in Mason or Deerfield Township who have Mason Public Library cards. TAB Auxiliary provides opportunities to volunteer at special programs and events for children and teens, including Homework Help and Summer Reading.

  • NO meetings.
  • No minimum service requirements.
  • TAB Auxiliary members are expected to join our Remind class in order to receive announcements and to use SignUp Genius to commit to volunteer slots. Remind is a free communication tool that connects teachers/librarians instantly with students and parents.
  • Teens, not parents, are expected to manage their own communications and scheduling with Ms. Cheryl as soon as possible and definitely from 9th grade on. This is part of developing job and communication skills.
  • TAB Auxiliary members are expected to be courteous to their fellow volunteers by giving at least 24-hour notice when canceling a volunteer commitment. This allows time for someone else to arrange transportation and fill the spot.
  • TAB Auxiliary members must purchase a TAB shirt to wear during public events. Financial assistance is available.
  • Most shifts occur on weekday afternoons 3:30-5:30 p.m. Very occasionally,  shifts are available Tuesday evenings or other times.

TAB Auxiliary members help with craft and kit preparation, book processing, decorating the library, creating props for programs, and may also be asked to volunteer at children's programs. 

TAB Auxiliary members ready for a bigger commitment can apply to switch from TAB Auxiliary to TAB in August if they’d like. Spots open each year as TAB members graduate or change to Auxiliary. Priority goes to volunteers who demonstrate commitment and integrity by volunteering repeatedly and reliably. Not showing up for a volunteer slot you committed to or canceling at the last minute will hurt your eligibility.

How to buy your Volunteer (TAB) Shirt (required)

Summer Volunteers, asa well as TAB  and  TAB Auxiliary members are required to wear TAB shirts when volunteering in public events. You can order your shirt online for about $7 to $14 here. We wear these shirts when we lead programs or work away from the library. The design doesn’t change year to year, so this is usually a onetime purchase (unless you grow…). Teen Advisory Board (TAB) - NOT CURRENTLY ACTIVE

The Mason Public Library Teen Advisory Board (TAB) is a service group with a substantial role in planning and conducting library events for children and teens.  This board is open to young adults grades 7 – 12 with library cards who live in Mason or Deerfield Township.  Members volunteer to plan and implement special programs and events for children and teens.

TAB members have minimum service requirements and guidelines for membership and for participation throughout the year. 

The Teen Advisory Board is not currently meeting. Interested teens should instead join TAB Auxiliary or our Summer Reading Volunteers. Previous TAB members are invited to contact Ms. Cheryl so she can make sure they have been added to the current Remind text/email groups.

Teen Advisory Board (TAB) Requirements
  • ALL TAB members will be expected to miss no more than 3 meeting during the school year. We meet first Mondays 6-7p.m. September – July except as noted on the meeting calendar.
  • No late admittance or early dismissal; more than 15 minutes late or missed is a missed meeting. Absences due to school-sponsored events, homework, family vacations, or illness still count as absences.
  • ALL TAB members are expected to contribute during meetings and to volunteer for committees and programs besides TAB meetings.
  • New TAB members will be accepted each year in August. Extra applicants will join TAB Auxiliary and participate in volunteering for planning and implementing programs sponsored by TAB. TAB Auxiliary, Homework Help Tutors, and Summer Volunteers who demonstrate commitment and integrity by volunteering repeatedly and reliably receive priority consideration.
  • Current TAB members may always choose to change to TAB Auxiliary and not attend TAB meetings every month.
  • TAB members are expected to join our Remind class in order to receive announcements and to use SignUp Genius to commit to volunteer slots. Members also use GroupMe to communicate and do their committee work. These are free communication and scheduling tools which connect teachers, students, and parents via email, text, and/or app.
  • TAB members are expected to be courteous to their fellow volunteers by giving at least 24 hours notice when cancelling a volunteer commitment. This allows time for someone else to arrange transportation and fill the spot. Not showing up for a volunteer slot you committed to or cancelling at the last minute will harm next year’s TAB eligibility.

Tutors: Homework Help K-6 - NOT CURRENTLY ACTIVE

THIS PROGRAM IS NOT CURRENTLY ACTIVE. WE HOPE TO BE ABLE TO RESUME IT DURING THE 22/23 SCHOOL YEAR.

Teens currently in Grades 7 – 12 may apply to tutor children in our Homework Help program. Parent-signed paper applications are accepted at the library from August 25- September 21.  Homework Help meets 5:30-6:15 on Tuesday nights October through April. Miss Debbie (debbie.hamilton @ masonpl.org) runs the program and manages our volunteer tutors. Tutors must be reliable, timely, patient, and positive. Teens generally work with the same 1-2 students all year. Teens should plan to arrive by 5:15p.m.

For that reason, we ask our tutors to make regular attendance and timeliness as high a priority as their patient support of the younger kids. That means really planning ahead in order to balance teen homework versus tutoring commitments. Absences due to studying, school-sponsored events, family travel, and illness still count as absences. We track tutor attendance, including noting no-shows versus absences where a tutor has notified Ms. Cheryl at least 24 hours before the absence. If you miss more than four times, for whatever reason, it is grounds for dismissal.

If their student(s) do not show, we can often offer alternate service projects during that session. Same-day communication with teens is often by phone as well as email. Each year we add new tutors as to those returning from last year. We also keep a waiting list of additional teens who are available as replacement tutors or last-minute subs.

Tutors are asked to commit to 6 or more weeks in a row in order to provide consistency for the children we will serve.  It is preferred that you commit for the entire semester. Again, if you miss more than four times, for whatever reason, it is grounds for dismissal.

            Please be aware that sometimes a child will not show for their tutoring session.  We wait 5 minutes then release the tutor if they want to leave.  We have no control over this situation.  If you are more than 5 minutes late, your child may be assigned to another tutor whose student did not show.
